There already exists several web based data collection systems, that collect data of traffic on the internet. The use of one such system used by the government caused much ado in the newspapers, post 9/11. Many research firms have created and marketed, data they have mined from the internet traffic. This electronic data collection system monitors what sites are visited, what words and phrases are searched for, etc. Usually this accomplished by the use of cookies.
Cookies, in the online computer world, are much different than the nice chocolate chips ones Mom used to make. Cookies are a computer files which contains coding that allows the person or company who placed it to accomplish some task. Some cookies are designed to help load webpages more quickly, some are used to remember information so that you can access a site without remembering your password, some are used to track your online movements, some are used to determine the functions that occur on your computer, and a myriad of other choices. What the cookies does is either collect and then transmit information when it is used in connection with a web based data collection system.
While most computer systems come with a level of security set to accept all cookies, many people also purchase virus software which alters this setting. People themselves can alter the coolies settings to defeat a web based data collection system that is dependent on cookies for its data. The virus software or cookies settings can do several things in addressing the collection of data by a web based data collection system.
How the Web Based Data Collection System Can Be Blocked
The first is to block the cookies placement on the computer hard drive. This is the most effective stopping method for cookies. This means that your web based data collection system is dead out of the gate, and that makes it useless to the business for whom the data is needed.
The second method of addressing the collection of data is to delete the cookie placed on the computer. This means that the collection of data may be, at best brief, depending on the settings which delete the cookie.
The third method is to allow the cookie to be placed, but block its transmittal of data to the web based data collection system.
These difficulties mean that the web based data collection system can no longer validly depend on its use of cookies to obtain data.
